Pink Ivory (African wood) & Glass
Pink Ivory is a very hard wood, known especially for its beautiful color. There exists a story claiming the trees only exist in a region controlled by an ancient tribe that believes past spirits of tribal members live in the trees and that the only things allowed to be made of the wood are the chief leader's staffs. This story is bogus. I know the wood dealer who knew the guys who came up with the story in order to elevate the value of the wood. Story or no story, the wood is still valuable. One of my favorite things about making sculptural art is taking an object and increasing its value.

"Alchemy" Installation and the Making of
Переглядів 466Рік тому
"Alchemy" stands 28 feet tall beside the newly renovated Nextec building in Birmingham, Alabama. The sculpture honors the steel making heritage of the city while celebrating the two leading, growing industries in the city; high tech electronics and medical technologies. The lower portion is a classic Bessimer Furnace made of Corten (weathering) steel, rolled H-beams, and a cast iron gear, origi...

What's going on over here? I'm creating my largest sculpture to-date, standing 28 feet tall. This project has been taking all autumn and the last half of summer. I expect to install it mid December, and it still needs a title. I'll soon be updating the Show Schedule on my website. Jury results for the first quarter of 2023 are pouring in and I'm looking forward to them!
How I Finish these Sculptures
Переглядів 8 тис.3 роки тому
A common question I receive is "What do you use for your finishes?". While the finish is relative to the wood type, my most commonly used is Acrylic Urethane from Ilva. It is an activated system, like automotive clear coat, but is formulated for wood. www.SalemBarker.com
Powercarving: Red Birch Laminate
Переглядів 18 тис.3 роки тому
Birch wood is naturally blonde in color, and accepts dye very well. Thin layers are soaked in dye, then laminated into a plywood. This construct makes a great sculpting medium. All grinders I use for sculpting are used with a "router speed control", or "electronic speed controller" in order to slow their RPM's. I recommend this. "The Outpouring" part 3, Completion & Installation

My late release on this final video was due to awaiting the completion of landscaping and ground based lighting for professional photography. Standing 25 feet tall in Homewood, Alabama (Birmingham area), my largest sculpture adorns the front of The Valley Hotel, a new Hilton Curio Collection hotel with the original "Ironwood" restaurant. The sculpture honors the area's steelmaking heritage that...
"The Outpouring" part 2 of 3

Beginning with a sketch on paper, "The Outpouring" took shape with rolled I-beams as an armature, and a shell/skin/body formed from 16 guage CorTen steel (aka "weathering steel"). My sculptural pursuits are mostly known for wood media, however my career preceeding art was in heavy industry, machining, and manufacturing. Metalworking melded with my art for this collosal sculpture, and I hope to ...
"The Outpouring" Sculpting with CorTen Steel. (Part 1 of 3)

Standing 25 feet tall in Homewood, Alabama, "The Outpouring" adorns the Valley Hotel, commemorating the heavy steel industry in the area, which earned Birmingham the name, "Pittsburgh of the South". Having worked in numerous steel mills performing service work (onsite machining) prior to my art pursuits, I felt made for the task. Corten steel withstands weathering without deterioration and offe...

Iced Earth is one of my all-time favorite bands. I was gratefully invited aboard their tour bus where their singer, Stu and I discussed our art and life as artists. Video has no music for my lack of copyright, but please check out their work. One of my favorite songs song by Stu is "Raven's Wing". check it out! ua-cam.com/video/dAKvZKRk_Rs/v-deo.html
The Use of Superglue on Wood Art
Переглядів 13 тис.4 роки тому
Every sculpture I make requires the use of cyanoacrylate, or superglue at least somewhere, or everywhere upon the wood prior to finishing. My preferred product is Starbond. I used to purchase the 1 ounce bottles at the hardware store every few weeks, now I buy by the quart from Starbond and store it in the refrigerator. Give it a try for 10% off via this link! www.starbond.com/?rfsn=3705058.126...

Good morning 🌅, one amazing piece of Art, well worth the time and effort spent on it,
Good morning 🌅, Are you still working, making sculptured art,
@@Hog-g2z yes. All day, every day. I just don't have time to edit videos. I'm going to try very soon.
I am retired English Dude living in France, I am thinking about of starting a small business, Making Art, and sculpture chairs, to supplement my loss of money over the years, through my ex female partner, If you can give me some advice if possible, please would be very much appreciate , And I wish you all the success for the future , regards
@Hog-g2z most of my sales are via juried outdoor art shows, popular in the United States. I really do not know anything about the art market in France. I can tell you that if you simply make beautiful things and photograph them well, marketing becomes much easier.
Okay, thank you for your reply,
Good morning 🌅, very nice work,
Do you buy the birch already laminated or do you laminate it yourself?
@@CSP.D-zignWerqz both. If it's thin layers and bright colors, I bought it from CWP-USA.COM. if layers are thick, I laminated it.
Amazing and beautiful, You make me feel like a beginner, maybe cos I am. Thanks I learnt a lot from this and appreciate it
Wow!!!🤩 ❤❤❤
I just ended up picking up a piece of Lignum Vitae and am looking on UA-cam for some inspiration of what to make with it for a Christmas gift. That piece really does have a soul of its own, well done!
Did ya get it finished in time for Christmas?
Very nice work,
@@Hog-g2z thank you.
Can you apply the red with acetone with a tiny brush if you don’t have an air sprayer?
@@grapplergirl10 try it. The worst that could happen is having to sand it off. I would guess that using a very soft, long bristle brush, like what's used for pinstriping, would work best.
Great job! Now I can put my circular saw, biscuit jointer, and chainsaws into better and more productive use as an abstract wood carver. Thanks for this great exposure!
5:10 Please tell me you wore a respirator while doing that... it makes me think of the Russians shoveling graphite off the roof of Chernobyl. That shit is nasty which I appreciate you mentioning earlier.
Yes, I always wear one.
Do wood work
Please more Videos!
Hi Salem, I'd love to know how you make those sanding disks. I'm in the process of learning the fine art of sanding at a high quality, your videos have been helpful - tx
how many hours did it take you to create it?
@boriserjavec6470 I would guess I worked 12 hour days for three months.
Nice art! What size/type scrollsaw blade do you use??
I use whatever blades are still left in the multi-package after my kids have finished making two dozen wooden swords.
Fantastic. Thank you. Can you please me the purpose of drilling a hole in the lower part of the tool you made with tyre rubber & sandpaper?
That's where the screw goes through the hole to mount it to the Multimaster.
@@SalemBarker Thanks Salem. Your vid reminded me to pull my Fein out of the attic for small a sanding job.
Thanks good info
was just thinking today how a multi tool could be used for carving. yours is the only video i could find. great job!
0:57 medium rare tree
Nice work. I use a cheap nylon pop up porta potty tent with a hole cut in the back for box fan and filter as my spray booth for small items. Seems to work pretty good.
That's a great idea.
TIme 18:39 looks like a termite. Hope it's just an ant.
18:39 is the end of the video.
@@SalemBarker My mistake, it was at 4:26.
Haha! Good eye, but that's definitely an ant. I have a kiln that I cook my woods in, and also an isopropyl alcohol bath that I can soak wood in for killing wood boring insects anyway .
Hi Salem, we met at your show this past week in Vero Beach. I know Bob very well as I mentioned, such a nice video of Bob and Lillian's home and so glad you are now part of his collection. The piece you have in Bob's collection stood out to me on your instagram account. Love it, and a very difficult piece to make I am sure. Great stuff, you are a genius.
😊
Do you have a video where you explain how you make those sanding attachments (end of this video)? I would really like to see 🙂
I never got around to doing the video but I would like to. If you own one of these grinders, you can simply use a 4mm screw to fasten pieces of plastic from old credit cards or such things, then glue a layer of foam rubber to it. Use aerosol spray adhesive to continually apply fresh sandpaper to the foam. This gives the opportunity to create profiles by custom shaping the sanding discs.
@@SalemBarker thanks a lot!!!
thanks a lot for the tips!!!
What are the small right angle sanders you showed at the end of of the video? Awesome piece of art.
Long neck angle grinder called "Merlin" from King Arthur's Tools. Katools.com
Ficou incrível! 👏👏👏👏👏
Nice piece. Appreciate your tool applications/mods. Please do a vid on that. Inspiring.
I do plan to make such a video. There are many tools I've made for oscillating power tools. I depend on them!
@@SalemBarker Ich freue mich auf diese Videos. Vielen Dank
Wonderful
HOW DID YOU OIL AND FINISH THE WOOD?
The finish on this one is Minwac Wipe-On Poly, but these days I spray Ilva Acrylic Urethane. Here's how: ua-cam.com/video/lYA4V5pel-I/v-deo.htmlsi=PiI6YoOuUAZIxP3w
Ok…using my multi tool for power carving? Yesssss!!! Who knew!!! You are amazing, Salem!
I do a LOT with the multimaster, and I depend on it for almost all sculptures.
Salem, a terrific piece. Very beautiful. Thank you for sharing the video. I always learn so much watching your videos!
Thank you, Steve! Much appreciated
I had a gun stock custom made of cocobolo, such beautiful wood.
Absolutely. I gave some pieces to a friend and that's what they were used for.
Hate Indiana limestone. The color is ugly and it crumbles. It’s like working in rubble. Thank you for the number of 2 sculp. Will contact him asap! Maybe we will meet again in Florida if you do the fair. Carol
Its as plain as concrete but the construction grade is great for sculpting. Here's my biggest one: ua-cam.com/video/49vFuGfhMMM/v-deo.htmlsi=94Alc2Q8bYAGaYkh My friend, Jason Quigno is highly talented with Indiana Limestone. Tell Myles I said hello. I'll be at the Naples show in a month. They're moving it from 5th Ave to Cambier Park from now on. I guess the businesses don't like us closing the street.
Hi, love the piece. Love your work. We met in Naples fla at the Artist fair on 5 th ave. Your pieces get more beautiful every time. Am working in wood now too as stone is so difficult to get. The compleat sculpture in nyc is the only place left. Do you know of any place to get stone in the Midwest? I am in Indiana. Thanks much. Carol
Do you like Indiana limestone? You live in best state to get it! I have a lot of it here in northern Illinois if you want. My favorite place for fancy stone is 2Sculpt. Myles Schacter is a great guy to buy from. Here's his number. 7854243824

Finally! You're back! Love it. And THANK YOU for sharing the construction of your base. I always struggle with the mounts.
Lol, yeah sorry I've forgotten about youtube. I create two to three sculptures per week and I'd film all of them if I had a video editor instead of myself.
Hi Salem! Mayra here, Yalan's Mom. Thank you for sharing the majestic Pink Ivory and your love for increasing the value of an object. Stories will be stories, right? Ha!

Hi 👋, very nice job
Thank you!
Hey there, Salem. Collin Steele here, from high school if you remember. It's great to see you doing what you love and doing it very well. Looks like you've got a real killer shop over there, man. Putting me to shame. :)
Collin!!!! Great to hear from you bro!!
@@SalemBarker you too, man. Keep making beauty. Your scrapwood pile must be insane, dude.
Actually it's quite small. I can make something from almost anything. Once pieces are really small I give them to friends who make pendants, pens, and othe tiny things.

PROXXON mini grinder vs MERLIN2 mini grinder, In your opinion which one do you think is better?
Definitely the Merlin. I've had to change circuit boards, power switches, power cords, and spindle bearings numerous times in three proxxons, but the Merlin has needed nothing in three years of regular use.
